Heavy Bag Training - significance of Bagwork For the Pugilist

Heavy Bag training is underlying in Boxing and Muay Thai. Plain and Simple. A heavy-bag is a Must. Heavy Bagwork is a must. It must be done. Of all the training tools in a Pugilist's environment, the bag is one of the most important tools for training power, as well as for perfecting technique. Although there are many types of heavy bags on the market, a good old fashion, leather bag that will withstand punishment for years is best.

A permissible heavy bag should be just that: heavy! Although there is a time and a place for a soft bag such as for a beginner or when injured/deeply bruised, ordinarily speaking soft" bags should be avoided. A bag that is flimsy, that flies all over the place when punched/kicked/elbowed/kneed does not "fit the cut" for man training for career, training to enter the ring. The bag must have substance and should resist the impact of all techniques: meaning, the bag should push back the weapon that it is struck by right back into position. For example, when kicking a permissible heavy bag the leg should plainly ricochet back and away from the bag right into start position.

THAI BOXING

Although a bag should and must have tremendous resistance, it is important as with any type of training to use tasteless sense and work your way up the ladder. In regards to using a bag that pro's are working on, a guaranteed injury will corollary if you punch, kick, knee or elbow such a hard heavy bag without permissible conditioning. The way to properly condition is simple. Do your bagwork consistently and moderately introduce yourself to the harder bags in the gym as time passes. I have seen many population along with "myself" injure themselves trying to work on a bag that is plainly too hard.

Take your time. Before using any bag (even if prompted by a trainer) touch the bag with your hands to get a feel of it and an idea as to how hard it is and what exactly you are getting yourself into! I have had a mischievous trainer, Nok Giat Busaba, introduce me to the hardest bag in the gym on my first day in Thailand asking me to kick it! Yes, I was injured and unable to use that leg for my first two weeks training.

Always check a heavy bag before you go to town on it!

Another important part of using a heavy bag is the wrapping of the hands. Wrap your hands, always. Hand wraps are affordable and do the job they were intended for; protecting the hands. As with the heavy bag there are many kinds of hand wraps. I personally use long wraps (170") that will contribute adequate distance to cover high on my wrist as well as a thick covering of the knuckles. At the end it will be up to you what kind of hand wraps work best. Whichever the case, use them! Well, there you have it. Now that you know the point of the heavy bag don't feel punished when a instructor sets you alone on one for a duration of time. He is just trying to help you!
