The Benefits of Cardio Kickboxing

The line between martial arts and expert cardio workout routines is kind of blurry; the difference between studying how to do a high kick and studying how to do a knee pull to an aerobic practice tape isn't that wide. That said, there are a lot of reasons to take up martial arts, fluctuating from self belief construction to normal practice and working on balance. One kind of practice program that's sweeping the gym set is the cardio kickboxing workout.

The primary cardio kickboxing program was called Tae Bo, and popularized by martial artist Billy Blanks. Tae Bo combines aerobic dance routines with short, sharp punches and kicks pulled from tae kwon do and boxing to generate a high energy, high execution workout. Tae Bo itself has been trademarked, so the generic term 'cardio kickboxing' has been used instead for similar workouts and similar styles of exercise.

The Benefits of Cardio Kickboxing

What's prominent to understand about cardio kickboxing as an practice program is that it's got elements of a martial art, but it is not sufficient self defense training on its own. It doesn't teach good blocking form, it doesn't teach throws or ground movements, or anything you might actually need for self defense, other than how to throw a punch or kick. People who learn cardio kickboxing routines have a head start in studying how to take up muay thai or tae kwon do, because a lot of the motions are very similar, and they'll have the fitness benefits to build on as a foundation.

Cardio kickboxing has some critical fitness benefits. It's a very high intensity aerobic workout; your heart will be beating fast, you will be sweating and you will be burning fat while doing it. It's also a lot more fun - and enjoyable - than most aerobic routines, and if you've spent too much time on a stair climber or a treadmill, you know exactly how much fun matters in holding you at your workout routine.

Cardio kickboxing emphasizes balance and mobility; you may start out feeling like a klutz doing cardio kickboxing, because the motions feel strange, but you will rapidly improve your balance and coordination while doing it. It's also a great way to build on flexibility, because it requires that your body move in ways that are enthralling to it. A typical workout of one hour is good for about 500 fat burned off in a session, about twice what a step aerobics class will do.

One thing you should be aware of is that kickboxing is not low impact in any way, shape or form. If you've got back stiffness or bad knees, this is not the right workout for you. It's also not the right workout for a couch potato; get into step aerobics first, while maintaining a targeted heart rate, then get into cardio kickboxing. Muscle strains and sprains are fairly tasteless at first.

Cardio kickboxing is also a great 'alternate day' program to do when doing weight training; it's a great unabridged body workout that helps reinforce the muscle construction you're doing, while maintaining flexibility and construction up an aerobic wind.

Kickboxing Combinations Applied to Cardio Kickboxing

This is the second in a series on martial arts stunning combinations used as choreography in cardio kickboxing. As said, a key discrepancy between a trained martial artist and a streetfighter is that the martial artist reflexively hits in sequences of three or four moves. The instinctive non-thinking reaction isn't just a one-move event, its a more sufficient practiced sequence of strikes. One punch or kick is easy to defend against, but three or four thrown in a row can be very difficult to deal with.

This reflexive reaction of hitting in sequences is only learned through lots of repetition and drills, performing sequences over and over until it is an self-operating reflex. Cardio kickboxing is an ideal way to do this. In fact many of the patterns in cardio kickboxing are drawn from such drills.

Useful for cardio kickboxing choreography, here are some real-world combinations culled from the martial art sport loosely called Kickboxing. What came to be known as competitive kickboxing is a constrained theory tasteless to a estimate of martial arts. The traditional brand of "Kickboxing" was developed in Japan in 1950 by boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi as a style/ruleset for beating Muay Thai fighters. In excellent competitive Kickboxing opponents are allowed to strike with both the fists and the feet, hitting above the hip. However, unlike Muay Thai, using elbows or knees was forbidden and the use of shins was also often not allowed.

Kicks are generally more powerful than punches and so are a principal tool. But in convention it is a good idea to set up a leg kick with handwork first. A jab or two will make your opponent think about your hands...then you step and kick. Or jab/cross/right kick, with the cross whether being more of a fake and push (which allows you to kick de facto hard) or a hard right that sets up a right kick It's more difficult to kick hard with this combo, but if you drill the guy with a good cross he'll be knocked back a bit and then you step in...

Here are the combinations:

Jab, cross, lead hook, cover

Jab, cross, lead hook, lead front kick

Jab, cross, rear leg front roundhouse kick, cover

Introduce the sequences half-time, then depending on the students, double it up. For the last sequence above make sure to tell the students to bring their rear foot back to the rear-foot beginning position after the roundhouse kick (instead of alongside the other). In convention the cover happens simultaneously with bringing the foot back.

Of policy for every rule (punch before kick) there is an exception. This sequence works particularly well on the bags.

Lead leg side kick, feet together, rear leg step back

Lead leg side kick, feet together, cross with rear leg step back

These combinations can be repeated individually or in sequences whether on the floor or with a heavy bag. Devote equal time to right and left leg transmit positions. Most are oriented nearby flat rotation nearby the spine, swinging the body so that each punch or kick winds up for the next. After you get the progressions down, start inter-mixing the combinations together in distinct patterns to gift something distinct every class.

Let me share what I have learned about cardio kickboxing with you. One basic move is the base move (shifting weight from the ball of one foot to the other). This is good for balance. Another is the bob and weave. The mixture move involves a series of quick punches thrown in combination. The front kick involves lifting your foot straight out in front of you with toes up. In the roundhouse kick, the legs are swung around until the shoelaces hit the side of the target in front.

Let's eye some more moves. The side kick is one in which the foot is lifted up in front of you and then kicked out at the side. If you like to punch, the hook, the jab and the uppercut are for you. My personal favorite is the jab, which involves a quick forward movement of the fist.

As a beginner, I was told to keep a few things in mind. In my first class I was taught not to practice myself beyond fatigue. "Do not lock joints or hold dumbbells when punching," My instructor told me. "Overextending kicks is always a bad idea," I was told.

I realized early on that Cardio Kickboxing is no substitute for a martial arts class. It is meant to be a form or exercise. The advantage is that it is not as violent as a martial arts class and is good exercise. citizen with medical problems like joint/knee issues should institution kickboxing with caution.

In performing cardio kickboxing techniques I suggest finding for a straightforward program. Start by working out once a week. Alternate between high intensity and low intensity workouts. Warm up and cool down with the main session of exercise. Complement cardio kickboxing with other forms of exercise.

Wear permissible practice gear - practice shorts and t-shirts or tank tops. A sports bra is good for women in training. Drink plenty of water and use a mat and perhaps a sports band around your forehead. Cardio kickboxing techniques have been a godsend to my practice routine. Here's wishing you the best as you kickbox your way to good health.
