Punching Bags - How to Hang 'Em

So, you have ultimately bought a punching bag and now are excited to get going on some home workouts. Hanging the bag is the next step. But, in your mind you are a little hesitant to hang such a heavy object, thinking that after you do so it will be ripped out of the ceiling as a effect of its weight and bulk.

So, what is the proper way to hang a punching bag? Is there a way to ensure that the bag will not damage the ceiling? Yes, there is.

THAI BOXING

For a bag up to 125 lbs. Any former chain and swivel assembly will be strong enough to hold the punching bag without causing any kind of structural damage. These assemblies are pretty right forward. All you have to do is drill a hole into the ceiling where you are attaching the bag. Then, insert the eye bolt (these come with the bag) into the drilled hole. Next, you attach the chain and swivel to the eye bolt and connect the bag to the chain. Pretty simple. Now, you are ready to take out that pent up vigor on the bag.

However, if you have a punching bag that weighs more than 125 lbs., hanging it with a former chain and swivel assembly may get you into some trouble. Simply put, most former chain and swivel assembly sets are not strong enough to hold such a heavy bag and will ultimately come loose and fall from the ceiling. For these kinds of bags, you need to get another type of ceiling mount so as to avoid any damage.

The goods you will need is called a heavy bag ceiling mount. All of boxing's premier suppliers sell them, along with Everlast Boxing and Balazs Boxing. Instead of drilling just one eye bolt into the ceiling, heavy bag ceiling mounts consist of steel platforms into which 4 bolts are drilled into the ceiling. The eye bolt is then attached to the steel platform, transferring the weight and pressure from the eye bolt to the steel buildings which can hold a lot more weight. This ensures that your heavy bag is accumulate enough to withstand the movment and pressure it is going to perceive during workouts

To sum up, if you are seeing to get a punching bag, don't think that you can just hang any bag with any kind of ceiling mounting system. If you ahve a heavy bag it is worth it to shell out a few extra bucks to avoid doing permanent damage to your house or gym.

Three Tips to Build Explosive Punching Power

There's a big incompatibility in the middle of an untrained novice and an experienced puncher or striker. It's not vigor or power, and it's not size or reach. The incompatibility is technique.

Experienced boxers and martial artists know how to make every part of the body work together while a punch. They maximize power while minimizing extraneous movement. Every punch is defined down to the smallest information until it becomes superior enough to render a grown man unconscious.

THAI BOXING

Here are some pointers you can use when you explore your own punching techniques. When you improve your technique, you add power; and when your technique is good, you'll have more than enough power in your punches.

Three Tips to Build Explosive Punching Power

Arm punching is weak: don't do it

Tip whole one for adding power to your punches is the most important: don't arm punch.

Arm punching is what most untrained guys do when they get in a fight. The flail their arms colse to like a demented windmill.

But even if one of these wild punches lands, it won't have any real power. To get truly superior punches techniques, you have to use your whole body. The feet shift, the legs and hips pivot, the torso twists, and the arms deliver all that power right where you want it to be: onto your knuckles.

Step in to pack power into your punch

Just as I said that it's not enough to simply use arm power to punch, you have to use all things you have to pack dynamite into your punches.

One of the most important ways to get maximum impact on your strikes is to step. Now, don't get ahead of me here. I don't mean that you should jump in like a crazed grasshopper every time you throw a punch. In this context, a step is simply a slight shift in your center of gravity towards your target.

Your feet might move only an inch, but it's still a step. And if you're throwing fast and loose combinations, your step might only be a slight foot tap. But it's still there, and it contributes to the impact you're creating with your strikes. Bet on it.

Shift your bodyweight to land heavy punches

So, in the last section I taught you that a step was integral to every power punch. But there's more to getting your body behind a punch than simply stepping and challenging your center of gravity. You can shift your body weight without genuinely challenging your whole center of gravity.

You do this by challenging the torso -- forward, backwards, or side to side -- while your punches.

Picture the left hook. If you don't shift your body weight when you throw a hook, the power just won't be there. It doesn't matter if you're stepping forward or back, you can still shift your torso while the hook to get power and pop on your punches.

If you have just purchased or are thinking about purchasing a punching bag for enhancing your martial arts skills or to get in shape - reconsider some of the following tips.

I will assume you are working with some form of heavy bag (something that can take a beating and offers some resistance). If you want to focus more on your movements, then you can reconsider getting a lighter punching bag or frees standing punching bag.

THAI BOXING

One of the challenges you will face as a bag owner, is boredom. You can only throw so many punches and kicks and spending 20 - 50 minutes on a bag can be rather tedious. If you are combining it with other workouts then you as a matter of fact just need to play with it for 5-10 minutes. If this is your main piece of rehearsal equipment, you will need to be more creative. Some of the tips below will help:

01 Music

Have you ever walked into a nightclub or dance studio with the beat blaring and sending a chill down your spine that makes you want to dance? Okay, even if you do not get the urge to move those feet when you hear the beat - you will be able to enhance your inspiration and lift up your vigor if you find some music that gets you into action. Normally, I would propose that you use music that is designed for Fitness Kickboxing. It will have a good beat that you can punch and kick to. If this isn't your style, then plainly play whatever that you enjoy (though it should energize you for fitness) or makes you feel great.

A side benefit you will get from playing music is that you will connect (internally) the joy of music to the act of working out. This will help your brain to see working out as fun and thus you will be more likely to consist of it in your regular routine.

02 generate a fun freestyle form / drill

Just throwing jabs and crosses can be too repetitive and boring for many of us. What I propose is that you generate a very long freestyle form that you can use on the bag. I offer a Dvd on a form called the strikes and kicks form, but you can also see it (for free) on YouTube by searching my name and for Strikes & Kicks Drill. The idea is that you make a list of moves for you to follow. Start off with 10 and then add to it as you expert the list. For example, the list might look something like this:

01 Jab

02 Knee

03 Spinning back fist

04 Round kick

05 Cross punch

I build lists like this all the time for our long term martial arts camps and the students love them because they are challenging, fun to learn and they offer something to work on for a long time without getting bored. I have a self-defense version too called the 1-40 form / drill. Again, start your list off small and build up on it. If you want the drill to fit into a work out, try the following as an advanced drill:

01 Warm up with basic boxing on the bag for 5-10 minutes

02 Blast the first part of your drill for 20 seconds

03 complete 40 seconds of your drill at a regular pace

04 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you complete the form or repeat the form at least 5 times

If you are trying to lose weight and get in shape, you will want more than 20 minutes for working out. I would propose at least 50 minutes (10-minute warm up, 5 slight Blast, 20 minutes of movement and end with someone else 5 slight Blast) because the body does not as a matter of fact start to burn that fat until After the first 20 minutes.

The idea is to get a good workout, but play with it until you have something that you look send to practicing. If you consist of some develop moves at assorted sections of your drill, you will be sure to enhance your martial art skills while getting a great work out on the bag.

The right bag or bags will depend on exactly what you are trying to do. I like to do the strikes and kicks drill on a Bob - Body Opponent Bag made by Century Martial arts. For fitness kickboxing I prefer the Muay Thai Style heavy bag.

Be sure to wear hand wraps (keep the wrists safe) and get a good pair of bag gloves.
